Mutations of the blue and yellow macaw..(Ara ararauna)
opaline/blue mutation or “silver” and Opaline or golden macaw
1. Opaline/blue mutation or “silver” Mutation
– Silver is produced by a combination of the Blue-mutation Blue & Gold Macaw, and the Opaline-mutation Blue & Gold Macaw.
It takes a minimum of two generations to combine the two said mutations to achieve this visual appearance. For Silver’s case in particular, because her father is also an Opaline Blue-mutation (wherein males require a minimum of three generations to produce), Silver is a fourth-generation or F4. This requires 12-15 years on the part of the breeder.
2. Opaline or golden macaw mutation
– ( The opaline mutation is sex linked )
Like the Blue-mutation macaw, this mutation is also sometimes seen- its coolers making it stand out like a jewel- among wild macaw flocks in South America.
The naturally occurring Opaline-mutation is a sex-linked mutation which causes a reduction in melanin, but enhances psittacin pigments in a pattern.
